Lone Sparrow
A lone Sparrow came by the porch as wind-driven snow swirled around him. He moved cautiously, closer to the door, in search of food and shelter. Protected there from the wind and snow he paused to find a small treasure; on the porch floor I had placed a feeder out of the weather to dry.
All around the feeder were bits of seeds that had shaken free from the portals. As they came into his view he stopped, looked all around and began to dine upon the morsels that would warm him through the night.
At times he flew to the cover of a snow-domed holly bush, easing inside .... safe from weather, predators and cold, then returning for another find. As would a monk on his alms round, he took no more than he needed, then off to solitude and meditation. I expect he will spend the night in that nearby holly bush, snug and with a breakfast invitation already made.
One could not set a table for a guest more welcomed than he.
