Springtime In Kentucky

I drove slowly along some Kentucky back roads today. Here and there I saw sweet glimpses of spring.

One has to look very closely at this time of year, but there it was. Here, a pale, green shoot pushing a leaf up and away. There, green onion tops three inches high. Looking at some trees in the distance I could see the slightest tinge of green at the outer edges of their silhouette .

I notice how the sod forms clumps of grass in new growth. The slant of light becomes slightly different somehow. Shadows are bolder, darker, more pronounced. Seeds sown by fall and winter winds are ready to come into their new forms.

Ice still held on in shadowed corners of a stream while the water flowed beneath the glaze and swirled out into the sunshine. Sparkling, shimmering, life-giving water on its way to awakening bulbs at stream’s edge.

Soon we will awaken to spring in all its glory and magnificence. It is so every spring in Kentucky.
One day gray, cold and bleak. Then, soon, clouds part, the warmth of sunshine on the earth brings forth the miracle ..... right on time ...... every time.
